Exporting and printing
How to print iPhone text messages (iMessage and SMS) for court
The iPhone Messages app has no button that saves a whole conversation as a file. That leaves three practical routes. Pick the one that fits the number of messages you need and the time you have.
Option 1: Screenshots (a few messages)
For a short exchange, screenshots are fine. Apple’s instructions are in Take a screenshot on your iPhone. To make them useful in court:
- Before you start, tap the conversation and scroll so the date and time headers are visible. Swipe left on a message bubble to show exact times.
- Capture the contact name or number at the top in the first screenshot.
- Overlap each screenshot with the previous one by a message or two, so it’s obvious nothing was skipped.
- Don’t crop or mark up the originals. Annotated copies, if you need them, should be separate.
- Put them in order with page numbers (how to organize screenshots).
Option 2: Export with a desktop tool (long conversations)
Desktop apps that read an iPhone backup can export a full conversation. iMazing, for example, documents export to PDF, Excel/CSV, Text and RSMF for Messages (SMS, RCS and iMessage) on Mac and PC, and has a guide for legal use. These are paid tools; check their current pricing and trial limits.
A CSV export has one row per message, with date, sender and text. You can open it in TextExhibits to get a court-style PDF with a cover page, the CSV file’s SHA-256 hash, “Page X of Y” numbering and optional Bates numbers (iMessage CSV to PDF). iMazing CSV files are fully supported. CSV files from Decipher TextMessage and iExplorer open too. Beta: tested on sample layouts, not yet on a real export. If anything looks wrong, email [email protected].
Option 3: The conversation is on WhatsApp
WhatsApp on iPhone has a built-in export. See WhatsApp chat to PDF on iPhone.
Tips that apply to every option
- Keep the phone and the thread. You may be asked to show the original. The federal authentication rule (FRE 901) accepts things like testimony from a witness with knowledge and “distinctive characteristics” of the item, taken together with all the circumstances.
- Note the time zone. iPhone exports and screenshots show local time. If the people texting were in different time zones, say which zone the times are in (time zones guide).
- Write down how you made the copy: the date, the device, the software and its version. If someone challenges the printout, you can explain it.
Open a WhatsApp export, SMS Backup & Restore XML or iMazing CSV and get a page-numbered transcript with the source file’s SHA-256 fingerprint. Nothing is uploaded.
